Australia’s Offshore Decommissioning Roadmap

Australia’s offshore decommissioning costs are projected to exceed AUD $60 billion over the next 50 years — a number likely to grow with the addition of offshore renewable projects like wind farms. This figure reflects the complex and multi-stage process required to safely retire offshore platforms, subsea infrastructure, and pipelines.

Innovation and Efficiency in Decommissioning

To meet this challenge, industry leaders are embracing technologies such as:
• Advanced robotics and automation
• Infrastructure reuse for offshore renewables
• New cutting and removal techniques
• 3D modeling and Digital Twins

Australia’s Offshore Resources Decommissioning Roadmap

Published in December 2024, the roadmap outlines a clear path to improve efficiency, transparency, and national capability in offshore decommissioning. It aims to develop a competitive local supply chain, boost technical readiness, and foster long-term planning.

Offshore Decommissioning Directorate and Stakeholder Survey

To deliver the roadmap, the Australian Government has established the Offshore Decommissioning Directorate. It will lead industry coordination, community engagement, and regulatory integration. A current survey invites stakeholders from business, academia, and civil society to contribute to shaping this vital emerging sector.
